16 - 19 September 2008
Sheraton Perth Hotel, Western Australia

The Australian Centre for Geomechanics will present the First Southern Hemisphere International Rock Mechanics Symposium in Perth in September 2008. Following the model of “NARMS” (North American Rock Mechanic Symposium) recently re-badged the “Canada-US Rock Mechanic Symposium”, the ACG aims to create a similar forum in our part of the world, involving the very active South American, South African, Asian, New Zealand and Australian rock mechanics communities.

Co-Chairs Dr Yves Potvin (ACG), Professor Arcady Dyskin (UWA), Professor John Carter (The University of Newcastle) and Dr Rob Jeffrey (CSIRO Petroleum) look forward to presenting this highly regarded event in Perth.

Objectives

SHIRMS 2008 will be an innovative symposium bringing together rock mechanics researchers and practitioners from the main areas of earth sciences to exchange ideas and lessons learnt, and to develop further collaboration and synergies. This symposium will set the agenda for future research and operational directions, and ensure the ongoing viability of the mining and civil engineering industries.

Topics

The technical programme will feature papers discussing the latest developments and improvements from around the globe.

SHIRMS will feature four main rock mechanics' streams including:

  • Mining
  • Civil
