SHIRMS 2008 was an innovative symposium held in Perth, Western Australia in September 2008. SHIRMS brought together more than 230 rock mechanics researchers and practitioners from the main areas of earth sciences to exchange ideas and lessons learnt, and to develop further collaboration and synergies. The symposium set the agenda for future research and operational directions.

SHIRMS featured the four main rock mechanics' streams:

  • Mining
  • Civil
  • Fundamental
  • Petroleum

It is anticipated that the next Southern Hemisphere International Rock Mechanics Symposium will be held in Cape Town, South Africa in 2011.
